A crown –also referred to as a “cap”—is used to restore a tooth that would otherwise be in danger of breaking. It covers and protects the entire tooth. It used to be that crowns had to have some metal in them for strength. Today, they can often be made entirely out of porcelain, resulting in a completely natural look.
A dental crown on a front tooth is needed when either a substantial portion of the tooth is gone or a good portion of the biting edge has broken or worn away. Unsightly old fillings, a tooth fracture, or a large area of tooth decay may also require that a dental crown.
A dental bridge is used when a tooth missing. It usually involves putting a crown on each tooth on either side of the missing tooth, and then a false tooth or teeth is suspended between the crowns.
